Akio Toyoda was born on May 3, 1956. He is the great-grandson of Japanese industrialist Sakichi Toyoda, as well as the grandson of Toyota Motors founder Kiichiro Toyoda and Takashimaya corporation founder Shinshichi Iida.

Toyoda was born in Nagoya on May 3, 1956, to Shoichiro Toyoda and Hiroko, also known as Mitsui. Since his carpenter-farmer great-great-grandfather, Ikichi Toyoda taught his son fabrication and carpentry, Toyoda’s family has long dominated the upper management of family businesses. When Katsuaki Watanabe was reassigned as Vice-Chairman in response to the quality control crisis, Akio Toyoda was the most likely candidate to take over the family business.

Toyoda received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Keio University in Japan and his Master of Finance degree from Babson College in Massachusetts. In 1984, he would join the family business.
