After Jordan Peele’s hit movie Get Out came out in 2017, the talented filmmaker dropped an even better film in 2019 called Us. Like Get Out, Us is currently streaming on Netflix, and new and old viewers are watching the psychological horror film.
The movie follows a suburban family who goes on a serene beach vacation in the California coastal town of Santa Cruz only to find themselves suddenly attacked and terrorized by their menacing doppelgängers. And it’s all connected to one of the family member’s dark past.
Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and Black Panther star Winston Duke star in the leading roles as Adelaide “Addy” Wilson and Gabriel “Gabe” Wilson. Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Anna Diop, and many others are also in the film.
The horror film is rated R, meaning it may be unsuitable for ages under 17. It was given this maturity rating for violence, terror, and strong language. There’s also some gore in the film, and characters are shown being beaten and stabbed with blunt and pointy objects. But there isn’t any nudity. Obviously, what one person finds scary, another person might not. But in our opinion, we wouldn’t consider Us a scary movie.
It’s definitely intense and creepy, and there are some jump scares throughout, but it’s not a movie that’ll have you having nightmares after watching. But if we were comparing Us to Get Out, we’d definitely say that Us is creepier. This seems to be a common theme in Peele’s movies. Overall, this film provides a spooky and unsettling experience but isn’t really scary.
Here’s a list of some scenes in the film that many parents would deem inappropriate for kids to be watching:
