Suzanne Marie Morrison, his mother, is a Canadian journalist and former press secretary to former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. His father, John Bennett Perry (born 1941), is an actor and former model from the United States. His parents split when he was a year old, and his mother later married Canadian-born television journalist Keith Morrison. Perry was a student at Ashbury College and was reared by his mother in Ottawa, Ontario. Matthew Perry developed a passion for tennis as a young man and rose to the top of the junior rankings.
