Sofia Vergara filed for divorce after her and Joe Manganiello's feelings over children

Actress Sofia Vergara has explained the reason why she got divorced from her second husband, Joe Manganiello.

The Hollywood star has opened up about her second divorce from the American actor after 10 years together. She explained age and children had a lot to do with the reason the celebrity couple parted ways. Sofia was previously married to Joe Gonzalez for two years from 1991 until their divorce in 1993. She and her first husband have a child together, Manolo, who was born the year his parents got married.

In a recent interview with the Spanish publication Elpais, the 51-year-old said where she was in her personal life. The celebrity said she didn’t want to be an “old mom” and thought it “wasn’t fair on the baby.”

Instead, she explained she wanted to be a grandmother. She added the age gap between her and her ex-husband also spurred on the separation.

She explained: “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby.”

The TV actress continued: “I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore. I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.

“So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do.”

Sofia said despite the upset in her personal life, she is feeling “very fulfilled” in her work life. Sofia said she “never dreamed” of becoming a movie star.

“I’ve done much more in my career than I ever dreamed of. I never dreamed of being an actress. It was an accident. I’ve been hosting America’s Got Talent for four years, a show where I have a lot of fun, I’m hosting this series all over the world, I have my own clothing and beauty brand.

“I can’t even think of complaining about anything.

Sofia was ‘surprised’ at how press reported on her divorce

Talking to CBS Sunday Mornings, Sofia Vergara said she was aware her divorce would appear in the news, as “it’s part of being a celebrity.”

“Yeah, of course, you’re up there and that’s part of being a celebrity. I knew it was going to happen. You can’t hide those things,” said the Modern Family actress. “It wasn’t bad. I have to say the press was very respectful and very nice. I thought that they were going to invent more things, you know how they usually [do]. And I was just kind of surprised. They kind of just said what it was and that was it.” 

The TV star continued by saying she was focused on “moving on.”

The couple announced their separation in July last year. In their short statement, they said they “love and respect” one another.

They told Page Six: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect for our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”
